Lichfield has received the top award in the Heart of England in Bloom 2017 competition, endorsing the exceptional quality of the city’s striking floral displays. Mentioned by judges as an area particularly worthy of recognition was the “colourful” new planting at Lichfield City train station, helping to influence their overall decision in favour of the Cathedral city.
The awards process involved judges taking a walk through Lichfield, with various stop points featuring floral displays, including Swinfen Hall, the canal and station.
As part of an ongoing process of improving the station environment, which formerly experienced problems with vandalism, Blooming Lichfield chair Richard Lewis suggested Lichfield City take part in the competition to further enhance its appearance for rail passengers and the local community alike.
A key element in the platform displays is a planter inspired by local landmark, Lichfield Cathedral, constructed in wood, donated by Marshdale Construction, by London Midland Soho depot technician Ben Williams and colleagues Shaun Wright and Clair Smith Wright. Blooming Lichfield has also supported London Midland by providing attractive hanging baskets, while the Tourist Association and Lichfield District Council also supplied new planters for installation on the platforms.
Tawhida Yaacoub, London Midland customer service manager for Cross City North, commented: “To win Heart of England in Bloom is an incredible achievement for Lichfield, and it certainly wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of a number of local businesses and individuals. Lichfield City station is a real story of transformation and the next steps are to keep the displays looking beautiful as well as adding new winter plants for the coming months.”

In 2017 London Midland was named as Britain's most improved train company by the Institute of Rail Operators and the UK's most improved organisation for customer service in the UKCSI survey.
In 2017 London Midland was awarded the Investors in People (IiP) Gold Award and been awarded the 5 Star award by the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) in 2014.
