London Midland will be showcasing the latest innovations in rail travel on Wednesday 18 October. The train company will be holding an industry ‘Demo Day’ at its innovation lab in Birmingham’s ICentrum building.
Labs by London Midland brings together some of the UK’s brightest and hottest technology start-ups to work as partners in developing solutions that improve rail journeys. Heralded as creating a new era for improving rail journeys when it opened earlier this year, Labs by London Midland is designed to bring fresh thinking to the industry.
London Midland managing director, Patrick Verwer, explains “Eighteen months ago we set ourselves a challenge – how does an industry, that is now in its third century, re-ignite the embers of innovation? After all the railway was the first social-network.
“The invention of the steam engine meant people, goods, commerce and, most importantly, ideas could move around the country, and ultimately the globe, faster than ever before. In the nineteenth century, the finest brains in the world applied themselves to creating bigger and better railways. With Labs by London Midland we are recapturing that pioneering spirit of innovation.”
Labs by London Midland offers an accelerator programme to help new-tech companies develop and showcase their ideas across the rail industry. Six companies from the first programme, run in the Spring, are already working with London Midland. The interest in the second programme was overwhelming, with over 100 applicants vying for just 10 places.
While working on their ideas, over a 12-week period, each company also receives coaching and advice across a range of business disciplines including finance, marketing and communications. The start-ups also have access to London Midland’s data to help them better understand the needs of rail customers.
